FRED Acronyms

 



One of the first things I noticed as I started to looking at FRED acronyms is that the term is used by many people.  I quickly found 126 unique FRED acronyms.  From engineering to economics, from faith to science, from medicine to the law, from my hometown to places around the world, I found examples of people using the FRED acronym everywhere. 

As it turns out, FRED is perhaps the easiest four-letter combination to type.  That is, geographically it takes up the least space on a QWERTY keyboard.  Each of its letters are next to each other and FRED can by typed with a single counter-clockwise trip.  One is hard pressed to find another four-letter example that can be created by a single spin (clockwise or counter-clockwise).

Interestingly, of the 126 unique FRED Acronyms I found, only 2 were negative.  In fact, even one of the negative acronyms has a similar acronym that is possibly positive.  While the term Fricking certainly could mean Foolish, it could also mean amazing.  If I said, “Look at that new invention, it is amazing!!  It provides so much value it is an incredibly Fricking Ridiculous Engineering Device!!” I could be speaking positively of the device.  Of course, the same acronym can be used negatively.  As Richard Feynman pointed out, there seems to be a “computer disease” in our society.  It’s like sometimes we get so fascinated with the concept of automation that we lose sight a project’s purpose.  Sometimes, without intending to do so, people waste valuable time creating silly contraptions that take so long to develop relative to the advantages they yield that they are counterproductive.  In this case the acronym would be, look at that “Foolishly Ridiculous Engineering Device” it serves no purpose.

This brings us to the other negative FRED acronym example: Foolishly Ridiculous Economic Disaster.  Sadly, it is actually the first FRED acronym I ever heard, and perhaps the main reason I am so interested in putting positivity into the acronym.  As a society we tend to have a negativity bias.  As the axiom goes, people are generally not remembered for their positive traits.  A person can live a life of virtue and inspiration, but if the person makes one mistake, the person will be remembered for it—rather than the positive parts of his/her life. 

If you are looking for great databases, groups to join, useful activities to perform, etc. then perhaps I have an acronym for you (please see the list below).  Conversely, if you are looking to give a name to a concept, a project, an invention, an organization, or something similar, then perhaps I have a special combination of letters for you: FRED.  I would like to ask a favor.  If you do decide to use the FRED acronym as so many others have, could I be so bold as to ask you to please consider choosing a positive tone? lol. If you need to describe something negatively, please go and find a different acronym.  Let’s all try to keep the FRED acronyms positive!! lol
