FITFANTASY/Trench
Long term self interest is the key to our upward spiral of civilization. With regards to fitness this means warming up, stretching, not taking steroids and or "performance enhancing" drugs and or shortcuts that will actually harm us in the long term.
Did you know that Ronnie Coleman lost many competitions? Well, I mean, he was a pro bodybuilder, so one can argue that he was still extremely amazing.. but, he got near the bottom in a bunch of competitions. A bodybuilder named Kevin Levrone took him aside and said, "Dude, I love you and everything... You should be really proud of yourself for coming this far, but you never even get close to winning. Why do you keep doing it?"
Ronnie said, "Because I love it."
Ronnie Coleman is both an icon for and against the concept of long term self-interest. To the extent that he warmed up, focused on keeping an amazing outlook, and allowed his body to recover, his is an inspiration.
Unfortunately, many people believe that his training was actually too intense. There is a famous video of Ronnie Coleman squatting more than 800 pounds 2 weeks before the Mr. Olympia competition. Many people believe this kind of training while cutting weight actually caused his body to become injured over time.
