It’s been said that the body becomes its function, but we often forget that the process takes time. Just as a construction worker’s hands will turn into bloody blisters if he, or she does too much work without giving his or her body a chance to recover, the same is true for improving our bodies. Conversely, if we give our bodies a chance to adapt it is amazing how much they can grow. We need to do more sets, more reps, and add more resistance, but we need to do so by irritating, instead of overwhelming. Here are some sources that explore the concept of irritating the body in order to stimulate growth.
